On December 19, the FIA kicked off with a bold tender for the tires of the Hypercars that will compete in the WEC between 2030 and 2032. Much like preparing for a grand automotive celebration, this tender will define the rubber that will roar these speed monsters at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Currently, Michelin holds the monopoly, but that could very well change.

A future paved with rubber

In a world where automotive technologies are advancing at a breakneck speed, the FIA has just released an announcement that is already making waves. Indeed, on its official website, the organization published the first documents related to this tender for tires intended for Hypercars. Currently, Michelin supplies the top category of endurance racing, having extended its contract until 2029, but this new tender opens the door for new brands that could join the race.

Tires to conquer the track

For the period 2030-2032, the FIA anticipates that the tender could be extended by one or two seasons if the work of the selected supplier meets expectations. Bids must be submitted by April 15, 2026, and the final decision will be announced on June 12, just before the start of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sharp technical specifications

On the technical side, the 18-inch rim tires must meet precise dimensions: no more than 13.5 inches wide at the front and 15 inches at the rear, with a total diameter not exceeding 28 inches. For the 24 Hours of Le Mans, three types of slicks will be available, along with two others for the rest of the calendar, not to mention a much-needed rain tire. The goal is ambitious: to allow drivers to complete three consecutive stints at Le Mans, and two for other races, while maintaining a performance level equivalent to that of 2025.

Massive and sustainable production

The next supplier will need to be capable of providing no less than 8,300 tires per year, for a total of 18 Hypercars. At around 900 euros each, these tires must contain at least 70% sustainable materials. This represents a real challenge for the supplier, who must not only meet performance requirements but also adhere to an eco-responsible approach.

Testing and preparation: a march towards excellence

As part of this tender, candidates will have the opportunity to conduct tests over a maximum period of five days, gathering all manufacturers between January and April 2026. Once the supplier is selected, a rolling schedule will be established: three days at the end of 2026, five in 2027, seven in 2028, and ten in 2029. All this to ensure that the tires are ready to face the challenges of endurance racing.

A high-level competition

This new tender is not just a simple administrative formality. It represents a crucial step for the future of Hypercars and the WEC. With the rise of sustainable technologies and the constant evolution of on-track performance, tires will play a determining role in the competition. Brands must prepare to innovate to meet the demands of the most prestigious races, such as those in Other championships.
