Introduction to Bidirectional Charging

Munich. BMW has stepped up its game with the Neue Klasse, introducing bidirectional charging solutions that include Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), and the much-anticipated Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capabilities. This initiative marks a significant advancement in the collaboration between BMW Group and E.ON, following the announcement of Germany’s first commercial V2G offer at the IAA Mobility event in September 2025.

Product Package and Benefits

Customers can now order a comprehensive product package that includes the BMW Wallbox Professional, the E.ON V2G electricity tariff (E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive V2G), and, if necessary, an intelligent metering system (smart meter). For those opting for the V2G service, there is a bonus of up to €720 annually based on the vehicle’s connection time, potentially allowing drivers of the new BMW iX3 to cover up to 14,000 kilometres per year without incurring charging costs.

How V2G Works

The V2G system enables BMW electric vehicles equipped with the latest 6th generation BMW eDrive technology to interact with the power grid, allowing energy from the vehicle’s high-voltage battery to be fed back into the grid. This process is managed by a jointly developed algorithm from BMW and E.ON, ensuring automatic charging and discharging.

Promotions and Discounts

The first 100 customers who purchase a BMW iX3 and select an E.ON V2G electricity tariff will benefit from a €700 discount on the BMW Wallbox Professional. This wallbox, capable of 11 kW charging power, is one of the first bidirectional models available on the market.

E.ON V2G Tariff Overview

  • Fixed Pricing: The E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive V2G tariff offers price certainty with a fixed energy price per kilowatt-hour and a base fee for household and charging electricity.
  • Bonus Accumulation: Customers can accumulate a bonus of up to €720 annually for every hour their vehicle is connected to the wallbox with V2G activated.
  • Compensation Rate: Each kilowatt-hour discharged back to the grid is compensated at €0.40 per kWh.

Control and Battery Protection

The My BMW App provides users with full control over their charging settings and allows them to monitor their real-time bonus status with E.ON. Intelligent protection features ensure that the high-voltage battery operates within optimal parameters, enhancing longevity and efficiency.

Integration with Energy Market

BMW now offers a new solution for all customers wishing to charge their electric vehicles intelligently while reducing costs. Vehicles can automatically charge at selected locations when electricity prices are low. This feature is available for all electrified BMW and MINI models and can be utilised with the BMW/MINI Wallbox Plus, Multifunction Charger, or any compatible AC-charging device.

Additional Savings

Customers using the E.ON ÖkoStrom Home & Drive tariff can save up to €240 annually on home charging costs, alongside an additional €50 bonus for new customers. This highlights BMW’s commitment to making electric vehicle ownership more economical and sustainable.
