Faulty Power Steering Pump Connection Sparks Recall
The issue lies with an electrical connection in the electric-hydraulic power steering pump (EHPSP). According to recall documents, manufacturing tolerances led to increased insertion force on the pump’s header. This could have caused the terminals to spread, compromising the electrical connection. Such a loose connection can lead to high electrical resistance, overheating, and a potential fire.
Warning Signs and Investigation Timeline
Vehicles affected by this defect may exhibit a loss of power steering assist or trigger a « Service Power Steering » diagnostic trouble code. Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, began investigating this potential issue in May 2023. Initially, the automaker concluded the problem did not pose an unreasonable risk. However, an increase in reported incidents prompted the reopening of the investigation in August 2024. This led to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation into engine compartment fires in 2021-2023 models.
Manufacturing Defect Confirmed After Extensive Testing
Stellantis continued its investigation through April 2026, ultimately pinpointing a loose electrical connection as the root cause. Despite attempts to replicate the problem through bench testing between June and December 2025, the automaker was initially unsuccessful. Advanced techniques like CT scans and X-rays were employed to confirm the manufacturing error.

The recall covers 1,076,999 vehicles, specifically the 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler and 2021-2025 Jeep Gladiator. Stellantis reports being aware of one injury potentially linked to this issue.
